We got this voicemail one morning. It was Mom, saying, "I have a really great idea. I think it might be important. Call me."
Mom had been looking for a t-shirt that would help her speak her mind about the current immigration debate, showing off the flags of the nations of her ancestry, but with the overall message that, other than those of Native American ancestry, we are all immigrants and the children of immigrants.
We'd all observed a tendency to paint all immigrants to the US with the same broad brush, regardless of their legal status. We agreed that the issue of illegal immigration should be resolved in a way that both preserves our security and treats all those involved with respect and compassion.
She couldn't find her shirt anywhere. Did we think we could make it? (We did, and we have. Click here to see it.)
But that prompted a larger discussion. What are the things which unite us instead of dividing us? We may not all agree about how to solve the world's problems, and we may vote for different people, but we can all agree on some basic things: We want peace. We want to preserve the planet for our children. We want everyone to be treated with dignity. And we know disagreement doesn't indicate a lack of patriotism.
Welcome to We Pluribus, a family business dedicated to the proposition that we are all in this together, we are all equal, and we should treat one another with dignity, respect, and acceptance.
Our shirts are designed with positive messages of unity. We're using eco-friendly practices and Fair Trade garments. And, to practice the socially and environmentally conscious ideas we're promoting, we donate 10% of our company's profit to worthwhile charitable organizations. We'll even let you choose which one your purchase will benefit. (See Feel Good About It.)
We Pluribus. We the people. No exceptions.
